A Brief Prologue #1

Those were the days: University of Leeds

When I started university back in 2006 I was told they were giving out jobs at the graduation ceremony. Take a picture with your hat and scroll, get drunk with your friends one last time then walk into your brand new job. Done. It was a widely accepted fact that the average graduate salary was £23,000 (Prospects.co.uk) , now myself and most of my friends are either in a job they don't like, or worse - unemployed. I graduated in 2009 and now work as a ‘temp’ in the head office of a thriving loan company. I say loan company, what I mean is ‘legal loan shark’, in fact I say head office, what I mean is call centre. Before that I worked for a year in a Topshop stockroom by day and served drunk students VK’s by night, not quite what I had in mind when i signed up to my £20,000 higher education.
However, I have enjoyed my time since graduation and spent the summer fulfilling a lifelong dream by travelling America.
This blog will be a glimpse into the life of a recession graduate with features and comment along the way. It might lack direction at first, but like my career, I’m sure it will be find its niche in the end. You can expect more gold like that in future posts.
