A Gradult at work: TV Studios: Pt. 1

(Read the introduction here)

So this week has seen me start on a short-term contract at the Media City UK Studio block. I’m working on behalf of the studios, running for a new Endemol game show hosted by Jason Bradbury (if anyone’s interested, you can follow his tweets about it on Twitter @jasonbradbury). Four days in, what’s happened?

  • I’ve gotten to know the facility really well. Because of the design, getting from A to B – which may only be a matter of metres as the crow flies – can sometimes be a very long walk! One of the electricians wore a pedometer the other day and managed to clock up over 6 miles, I'm planning to take one in this week.
  • We’ve had 3 days of rehearsals for cameras, lighting, games etc. and 1 day of actual show rehearsal with audience and all. After the first three days it was great to get the audience in and see how it's all going to look.
  • I’ve started to fully understand exactly what goes into a production of this size, from the amount of technology to the sheer number of people involved, the scale is huge. Over the course of three weeks , there are around 190 people coming and going on site, as well as many more who work there full time.
  • Oh, and production staff drink a lot of tea and coffee, I mean a lot. They should really watch their caffeine intake…

I’ll have more snippets of info next week; I may even have something more of interest to write about by then and maybe a few pictures! The first full on recording is tomorrow.

There’s a picture of Media City UK in the early morning mist in my first post here, and a picture of inside one of the HD studios here.
